Andover, HampshireWe hired this decorator based on the glowing reviews and the “decorator with distinction” branding. The reality was the complete opposite. Prep was poor, paint was left on frames and woodwork, wallpaper edges were rough and badly cut with gaps showing the wall, and several lengths started lifting within about a week. On top of that, we gave clear written instructions on paint type and finish and he still used the wrong finish in key areas, meaning it now needs rubbing down and redoing.
When we raised concerns privately and calmly, he did not handle it like a professional. He refused to return, blamed the house, accused us of “nit picking,” and tried to twist the invoice situation to suit his story. He even wrote that he would be “making a few telephone calls,” and also dragged our household care arrangements into the argument with comments like “we did see… care that we should not have been exposed to” and “Perhaps we need to report this further.” That is not normal, appropriate conduct from a tradesperson, especially in a home with vulnerable adults.
Checkatrade investigated and have since permanently removed him after finding the work to be shockingly substandard. That says it all. If he wants to market himself as a decorator “with distinction,” he should start by producing basic professional standards and behaving professionally when challenged. Avoid.
